Otero Valley Vineyards is a family vineyard high in New Mexico's Sacramento Mountains. Eduardo planted the first vines in 1982. Three generations later, we grow Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc and Riesling at almost 7,000 feet, and make a sparkling wine we are quietly proud of.
Otero Valley Vineyards es un viñedo familiar en lo alto de las montañas Sacramento de Nuevo México. Eduardo plantó las primeras vides en 1982. Tres generaciones después, cultivamos Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc y Riesling a casi 7,000 pies de altura, y hacemos un vino espumoso del que estamos, sin hacer ruido, muy orgullosos.

High desert, cold nights, thin bright air. It is not where most people expect to find vines, which is exactly why the fruit tastes the way it does. We grow three grapes that get along with the altitude, Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc and Riesling, and we look after them the way Eduardo taught us. That is the whole secret.
Desierto alto, noches frías, aire fino y claro. No es donde la mayoría espera encontrar vides, y justo por eso la fruta sabe como sabe. Cultivamos tres uvas que se llevan bien con la altura, Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc y Riesling, y las cuidamos como nos enseñó Eduardo. Ese es todo el secreto.

About twenty minutes above Alamogordo, near Cloudcroft. A 45-minute tasting flight in our tasting room, open Thursday to Monday, 11 to 5. Book ahead or just come by; we always keep room for walk-ins, and Camila will make sure you are looked after.
A unos veinte minutos subiendo desde Alamogordo, cerca de Cloudcroft. Una cata de 45 minutos en nuestra sala, abierta de jueves a lunes, de 11 a 5. Reserva o simplemente pasa; siempre guardamos lugar para quien llega sin reservar, y Camila se encarga de que estés bien atendido.

They told me New Mexico couldn't make serious wine. I planted anyway.
Me dijeron que Nuevo México no podía hacer vino serio. Planté de todos modos.
My father bought this land in the 1970s. I put the first vines in the ground in 1982, and plenty of people said I was wasting good mountain. The nights up here are cold and the air is thin, and it turns out the grapes like that better than I did those first winters.
We never chased a trick. We just farm it carefully, and the wine says the rest. Now Camila and Lucia run the place, and I get to walk the rows and pour a glass for whoever comes up the hill. Come and let me pour you one.
Mi padre compró esta tierra en los años setenta. Yo metí las primeras vides en el suelo en 1982, y no faltó quien dijera que estaba desperdiciando buena montaña. Aquí arriba las noches son frías y el aire es fino, y resulta que a las uvas eso les gusta más de lo que a mí me gustó aquellos primeros inviernos.
Nunca buscamos un truco. Simplemente cultivamos con cuidado, y el vino dice lo demás. Ahora Camila y Lucia llevan el negocio, y a mí me toca caminar entre las hileras y servirle una copa a quien suba la cuesta. Ven, y deja que te sirva una.

Our signature sparkling wine took a silver medal at a regional Southwest wine competition. It is the bottle we open for harvest weekend, for the release party, and for anyone who still thinks mountain wine is a novelty.
Nuestro espumoso ganó medalla de plata en un concurso regional de vinos del Suroeste. Es la botella que abrimos en el fin de semana de vendimia, en la fiesta de lanzamiento, y para quien todavía cree que el vino de montaña es una curiosidad.
