Our storyNuestra historia

Three generations on one mountain.

Tres generaciones en una misma montaña.

A grandfather who bought high ground with no plan for grapes. A son who planted them anyway. Two daughters and a mother who run the place today. This is how a family ended up making serious wine at almost 7,000 feet.

The landLa tierra

High desert, bought before anyone talked about wine.

This is high desert: almost 7,000 feet up in the Sacramento Mountains of Otero County, about twenty minutes above Alamogordo and a short drive from Cloudcroft. The days are bright, the nights are cold, and the air is thin.

Eduardo's father bought the land in the 1970s. He did not buy it for grapes. Nobody was growing grapes up here, and most people would have told you why. The land waited, the way land does, for someone to get an idea about it.

Three generations later we are still on the same ground. We have not moved, and we have not needed to. Everything the wine is comes from this mountain and from looking after it carefully.

Eduardo's chapter, in his own voiceEl capítulo de Eduardo, en su propia voz

It did not make me angry. It made me careful.

No me dio coraje. Me hizo cuidadoso.

I was a young man when my father bought this ground. He did not buy it for grapes. I am the one who got the idea, and I got it slowly, walking the land, watching where the frost settled and where the sun arrived first in the morning.

In 1982 I planted the first vines. People who knew wine told me, plainly and not unkindly, that New Mexico could not make serious wine and that I should keep my money. I have thought about that sentence for more than forty years. It did not make me angry. It made me careful.

So that is what we did. We farmed it carefully. Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc and Riesling, three grapes that turned out to like this mountain as much as I do. Some years were hard. We did not chase a trick or a fashion. We just kept farming.

The sparkling came later. When it took a silver medal at a regional Southwest competition, I thought about the people who told me to keep my money. I hope they had a glass.

I am stepping back now. Camila has the tasting room and Lucia has the cellar, and Rosa, as always, keeps every one of us honest. But you will still find me in the rows most mornings. Come up. I will pour.

No me dio coraje. Me hizo cuidadoso.

Sube. Yo sirvo.

Two daughters, two halves of the same job.

Dos hijas, dos mitades del mismo trabajo.

Hospitality and production carry equal weight here, on purpose. One sister makes sure the wine is worth the drive. The other makes sure the drive is worth it.

Camila runs hospitality and the tasting room. The welcome, the flight, the pace of an afternoon up here: that is her work, and she takes it seriously in the least serious way possible. If you have questions before you come, she is the one who answers the email.

Lucia

Younger daughter, head of production and winemakingHija menor, jefa de producción y enología

Lucia is head of production and winemaking. She farms the vines, makes the wine, and on a limited number of dates each year walks small groups through the vineyard and the cellar herself. Growing at altitude is her subject. Ask her anything; she will tell you exactly what she thinks.

The familyLa familia

Rosa keeps everyone honest.

Rosa nos mantiene a todos en línea.

Rosa, Eduardo's wife and the girls' mother, keeps everyone honest. Ask any of us. There is not a decision made on this mountain that has not been run past her, and the ones that were not, we regret.

We are a Mexican-American family and we run this place in two languages, because that is how we talk at our own table. You will hear both in the tasting room, on the tours and in every word on this site. Neither one is the translation.

What we are trying to prove, with careful farming at altitude, is that New Mexico makes serious wine. What we are trying to do, every Thursday to Monday, is share it the way a family shares its table. Both of those matter to us equally, and you are welcome to hold us to it.

Come and meet us. We will pour.

Ven a conocernos. Nosotros servimos.
